A Call for System Change

With the upcoming 2016 national elections and the usual accompanying political dramas, a group is also advocating for a change in the Philippine constitution.

There have been many movements that advocated charter change before, but according to Bagong Sistema, Bagong Pag-asa (BSBP) their proposal is a genuine call for the change in the system of our country. For starters, they don’t want to use the term Charter Change (ChaCha) as it can be associated to the previous attempts of former administrations to extend their terms.

Headed by former Chief Justice Reynato Puno, BSBP is currently appealing to the House of Congress to sign a petition to include in the official ballot an extra box for the people to vote if they want to have a convention calling for an amendment to our current constitution. The group took this route so that it would be in the hands of the people to decide whether they want a change in our system and eventually obliging the next government to do so.

So what can we, ordinary citizens, do for this advocacy? Awareness is the biggest influencer for change. In opening the eyes of our fellow citizens that we need a genuine reform in our country, we can start a clamor for our legislator to sign the petition. Let us demand our congressmen to support the move to ask the people if they want a constitutional convention.

HENERAL LUNA IS ALSO FOR CHANGE!

But this advocacy is not without fun too! To raise funds for the movement, BSBP is selling tickets for a special screening of Heneral Luna on November 30, 2015 at the Meralco Theater.

BSBP’s Conrado Generoso quotes Heneral Luna’s clamor for change in the governments mind set during the Filipino-American war, referring to the famous line “Bayan o sarili?”
