Compared to our neighbors in Southeast Asia, Philippine internet speed ranks waaaay below. And this is just icing on the sh*tty cake of expensive subscriptions, bad customer service, and limited usage (read: data capping).  What’s more, the available speeds are typically not as advertised.

These have been the complaints of Filipinos when it comes to PLDT’s and Globe Telecom’s internet service. Unfortunately, the people don’t really have much of a choice as these two companies completely dominate the market.

But everything will soon change as rumor has it, Telstra is planning to deliver first world, high-speed internet service in the country.

TELSTRA

Telstra is Australia’s leading telecommunications and information services company, offering a full range of communications services and competing in all telecommunications markets.

In Australia, Telstra provides 16.7 million mobile services, 7.3 million fixed voice services and 3.1 million retail fixed broadband services.

INVESTMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES

Andy Penn, Telstra’s CEO, had confirmed that they are now in talks with San Miguel Corporation, led by Ramon S. Ang, for a possible joint venture in the country’s wireless internet connection .

It has been reported that the Australian-based company will invest about US$1 Billion. The amount does not include the investment from San Miguel which is 60% more than its Australian counterpart as required by the 1987 constitution.

BLAZING FAST?

Telstra is reported to deliver up to 100mbps 4G internet fun. But as to how they can actually achieve this given the current infrastructure is still unknown. Still, the netizens are excited in welcoming the improved internet speed development and are not too concerned with the particulars.

BUT DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP JUST YET

According to a report, Telstra’s CEO confirmed that they have began talks with San Miguel Corporation for a possible joint venture, no deal has been made yet, so there is no certainty that it will push through.

However, if these talks materialize, Telstra-San Miguel JV expects to shake things up in the competitive internet market.

Keep your fingers crossed, guys!
